More and more mothers are opting to encapsulate their placenta and it’s a good choice because placenta encapsulation can be an excellent tool in a new mother’s postpartum toolbox.
Placenta encapsulation is the process in which your placenta is dehydrated and ground up into a fine powder. The powder is put into capsules that you ingest the just like any other vitamin or supplement.
Some of the benefits of ingesting encapsulated placenta:
- Increased energy
- Balanced hormones
- Enhanced milk production
- Elevated mood
The Fayetteville Doulas offers different options when it comes to placenta encapsulation. We can process your placenta using either the raw method or the steamed method or we can process the placenta using half raw, half steamed.
Raw Method:
The placenta is placed in the dehydrator raw and is dehydrated at 160 degrees. Clients who have a positive test result for GBS (group beta strep) are highly encouraged to have their placenta processed via the steamed method. The raw method yields a greater number of placenta capsules, and the capsules have a shelf life of 12 months. Raw capsules are more concentrated and often have a stronger effect than the steamed method.
Steamed Method:
The steamed method of placenta encapsulation is inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine, and uses lemon, ginger, and steam prior to being placed in the dehydrator. The steamed method yields slightly fewer placenta capsules than the raw method but has a much longer shelf life. The effects of the steamed method are usually more mellow.
Clients who choose The Fayetteville Doulas to encapsulate their placenta can have the entire encapsulation process completed at their home, which we highly suggest; though we understand the desire to have the placenta encapsulated outside of your home and we’re happy to provide this service as well.
A few of the benefits of having your placenta encapsulated in your home
- You are responsible for the transportation of your placenta, it never leaves your sight. As a result, you have a 100% guarantee that your placenta was not mixed up with someone else’s and that you are consuming your placenta.
- You can view the entire process from start to finish, including our safety measures and sanitation procedures. You’re also welcome to take photos and ask questions.
- Your placenta encapsulation specialist is knowledgeable in all areas of postpartum recovery and can answer your questions while she’s at your home–you get a taste of postpartum doula services!
Once you give birth, you contact your encapsulator and they will set up a time to come to your home and encapsulate your placenta. They bring with them everything they need–you only supply the counter space and your kitchen sink, and a stove if opting for the steamed method. Your encapsulator will spend approximately 1-2 hours preparing and processing your placenta. She will leave the dehydrator at your home overnight and return approximately 24 hours later to finish the process. She leaves your kitchen clean and properly sanitized and your placenta package ready for you to enjoy!
